How to Sell Your Used Mountain Bike

Mountain bikes hold their value better than almost any other sports equipment category. A quality full-suspension or hardtail MTB from a reputable brand will find a buyer quickly if listed correctly and priced honestly. Here's how to do it well.

What Your MTB Is Worth

As a rough guide: quality full-suspension bikes (Trek, Specialized, Santa Cruz, Canyon, Pivot) depreciate at around 20–25% per year from retail for the first three years, then slow down. A bike that cost €3,500 new should realistically list at €1,800–2,200 after two years in very good condition.

Hardtails depreciate slightly faster as they're typically used for more aggressive riding and wear more quickly. Entry-level bikes (below €800 new) often struggle to achieve meaningful resale prices — buyers at that end of the market are price-sensitive and there's a lot of competition.

The drivetrain is the biggest variable. A bike with a fresh chain and cassette is worth significantly more than an identical bike with a worn drivetrain.

Where to List

xSports is a specialist marketplace for sports gear including MTBs, with buyers specifically looking for bikes. Listing here puts your bike in front of the right audience. You can also cross-post to general platforms for wider reach — our import tool makes it easy to bring listings across from other platforms.

Local Facebook cycling groups are worth trying for very regional sales (avoiding shipping). eBay works for higher-value bikes where buyers will travel or pay shipping.

A good quality MTB listed on two or three platforms simultaneously typically sells within two to four weeks if priced correctly.

How to Write a Great MTB Listing

A good mountain bike listing includes: brand, model, year, frame size, frame material (aluminium, carbon), suspension travel (e.g. 140mm/130mm), key components (groupset, fork brand and model, shock brand and model), wheel size (29", 27.5"), drivetrain (1x12, 2x11 etc.), and any upgrades or replacements.

"Canyon Spectral CF 8 2022, size L, carbon frame, RockShox Pike Ultimate 140mm, Fox Float DPX2 Performance, Shimano Deore 12sp, DT Swiss M 1900 wheels, new chain and cassette, one small scratch on downtube, comes with original pedals" is a listing that will sell. "Mountain bike, good condition" will not.

Preparing Your Bike to Sell

A bike that's clean, adjusted, and clearly well-maintained sells faster and for more money. Before listing:

Clean the bike thoroughly — a clean bike photographs well and signals to buyers that it's been cared for. Check the drivetrain — a fresh chain and cassette will add more to your sale price than they cost. Pump the tyres and check for cuts. Wipe down the suspension stanchions. Take photos in good light against a plain background — include the drive side, non-drive side, cockpit, and any relevant detail shots.
